I visited my ancestral home in Kerala, South India. The house has been in the family for over a thousand years. In the garden I came face to face with a python that was half uncurled from a tree. We looked at each other motionless for almost an hour, and then he lowered himself to the ground and disappeared into a wild overgrown corner. When I told my uncle, who lived in the house, he was beside himself. He said that there had been stories for generations about a snake but no one had ever seen it. My uncle died soon afterwards, and just a few years later I heard that against all tradition and custom, the house, known as a taravad, had been sold and was no longer in the family.
